This Georgian townhouse garden has been transformed from a tired, overgrown space into an elegant and functional outdoor sanctuary. The front and rear gardens now balance style, privacy and usability, with a bound gravel driveway, structured borders, vibrant and restful planting and thoughtfully designed seating areas. Every element has been carefully considered to complement the house, create a sense of harmony and enhance our clients’ enjoyment of their garden.
The Brief
Our clients wanted to transform their Georgian townhouse garden into a coherent, functional and visually appealing space. The garden had become tired over time, old paving, low walls and entrance piers had lost their charm, mature trees and shrubs were overgrown and the overall layout lacked flow. Rear neighbours overlooked the garden, so privacy and screening were important considerations. The goal for our garden designers, and landscapers, was to create a front and rear garden that complemented the elegance of the house while offering enjoyable, practical spaces.
Garden Elements
The Challenge Ahead
The existing garden had many old, worn hard surfaces and overgrown planting. Its long, narrow shape with neighbours overlooking the rear made privacy and proportion key design challenges. The client also wanted a balance of restful planting, vibrant colour and practical, usable spaces, while retaining a sense of elegance befitting a Georgian townhouse.
Haywood Landscapes’ Approach
Front Garden: Elegance and Functionality
The driveway was reshaped by our garden landscapers to echo the fine lines of the house façade, finished with bound gravel for a polished, low-maintenance look.
New surrounding walls with ‘eyelid’ downlighting and replaced entrance piers improved both aesthetics and security. Electric gates added understated elegance.
Front garden borders were replanted in a restful style, including a tall Portuguese Laurel hedge and columnar flowering Cherries.
A sloping bed presenting to basement windows was planted with a colourful, fragrant palette, softening the hardscape and adding interest.
Rear Garden: Privacy and Usable Spaces
Paving was redesigned to better proportions, creating a generous seating area deeper into the garden away from the shade.
An Oak pergola provides a sheltered spot for sun or shade on warmer days.
Pathways are bordered with generous planting, softening the rear façade of the house and creating a sense of depth.
Vibrant planting is placed near the house, transitioning to more restful schemes around the patio and pergola.
A dedicated herb garden sits near the basement steps for easy access.
Ornamental trees such as flowering Cherries, Crab apples, a May tree and the visually appealing Bastard Service Tree were planted in the lower half of the garden to provide screening from neighbouring properties as they mature.
A potential wildflower meadow area around the ornamental trees is under consideration, to add seasonal colour and biodiversity.
The Results
The Georgian townhouse garden is now a harmonious combination of elegance, functionality and privacy. The front garden complements the architectural lines of the house, while the rear offers a sequence of inviting, usable spaces framed by beautiful, thoughtful planting. With enhanced screening and a mix of vibrant and restful areas, the garden is transformed into a sanctuary that balances practicality with beauty, providing our clients with a space they can enjoy throughout the year.
